In Kalkar in 1972, construction was started on the SNR-300, the first fast breeder nuclear reactor in Germany. The reactor was designed to use plutonium as fuel and be cooled by sodium, and was to output 327 megawatts of energy. Opposition against the project grew after 1979 Three Mile Island and 1986 Chernobyl disasters and 1991 the projetct was cancelled.
